The A LIST Guide team worked with Merchgirls to create a bespoke bag for the upcoming Events Uncovered show.

Our editor Emma Castle caught up with Pippa Joseph and Hannah Chipkin, the girls behind the brand, to find out more about their thriving business.

How long has Merch Girls been around?

Merchgirls formally launched in September 2015. Before that we were working in associated fashion design and production for our own fashion label and others.

How are you different from other merchandise companies?

Merchgirls is the new kid on the block when it comes to merchandise. We are a design agency that makes merchandise that’s twice as nice. The merchandise we create is on trend, design-led and desirable – but it is still accessible and affordable to the market.

Merchgirls began with one client, The Australian Ballet. On the back of our former fashion label, we were commissioned to full merchandise design range for The Australian Ballet to retail. From that job, a new website, and some great word of mouth our business seems to have resonated with a lot of amazing companies looking for something custom made and more special than the current merchandise companies offer. 

Merchgirls is always sourcing and scouring the globe for on trend, stylish but affordable merchandise items. When clients meet us and see the types of items we offer, they are always so delighted and often squeals are heard of, ‘Oh my god, we are so happy we found you. We want it ALL’. We can create merchandise for sale, promotional and gifting purposes and everything we put forward something that the user would be happy to use long after the event.

How did you come up with the concept for the EU bags?

We wanted to create something special for the EU event bags, a bag that people would want to use long after the event. We started by looking at the artwork cover of the A LIST Guide. It was a jungle theme artwork. After some initial concepts (including geometric patterns and surreal eighties landscapes), we came up with our own interpretation of a jungle theme that the EU team loved. We then finessed the design and colour palette – working with a refined colour palette of rust, olive green, lilac and dusty pink. The result is a leafy sunset jungle scene – complete with metallic gold handles and binding. We are really proud of the finished product and hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them.

What inspires you?

  • The challenge of every job – as all items are custom-made, we have the responsibility of coming up with stylish merchandise to suit each client, each with their own identity.

  • Good typography
  • Patterned graphics
  • Beautiful interiors
  • Mid century architecture
  • Simple construction and good fabrications

Who are you working with at the moment?

We have picked up some pretty big clients this year and have to pinch ourselves sometimes! To name a few: Seek, Australian Open, Cricket Australia, YouTube, Bauer Media and Women’s Health Week.

Where can people check out your recent work?

We have just uploaded a bunch of our latest work onto our website. We are always working on new jobs and adding new products to our growing catalogue. We also plan to have our master catalogue of most popular products for customization ready in the next few months.

We are also due to release our leather desk items suitable for corporate gifting very soon. Lots to look out for!
