The client requested a hybrid between A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Alice in Wonderland and The Secret Garden. The team at Funktionality received an intriguing brief for the 2017 Macquarie Christmas Party.
Open the garden gate …
Enter down this lush green path, peep beneath the foliage green,
Lift your eyes midst stars and trees oh – what mysteries to be seen,
A flutter here! Sweet laughter, where? Like crystal tinkling in the air,
Gossamer wings by ferns and flowers, faeries hiding in the bowers,
Sipping nectar oh so sweet whilst dancing to a magic beat…
The Calyx (part of the Trippas White Group), nestled in the heart of the Royal Botanic Gardens was the perfect setting for this whimsical garden event.
Taking inspiration from the magical stories in the brief, guests were guided through the event by some colourful characters including Queen Titania, Donkey, fairies, as well as Birds of Paradise stilt performers and an LED hula performer. Breaking the space into different experiences, guests had the opportunity to ‘Dress for Magic’ at an enchanting dress up station, try a custom cocktail inspired by Alice at the ‘Drink Me’ bar, play in an oversized game of chess in an Alice in Wonderland inspired setting or taste a garden-inspired sweet treat from the Grumpy Gardener’s dessert cart. In the centre of the outdoor space, perched on the island was Titania on her throne, beneath a canopy of fairy lights.
Funktionality brought the event together with a whimsical custom soundscape that played throughout the space and their bespoke styling. Key elements such as whimsical props like toadstools and moss rabbits, ornate mirrors, rustic garden props and enchanting lighting complimented furniture and décor in rich colours and fabrics.
